The Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall - Katie Alender

Title: The Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall
Author: Katie Alender
Format: Hardcover

***Spoiler Alert***
There are some pretty heavy spoilers in this review.  If you don't like spoilers and haven't read the book, save the review for later.

In this asylum, your mind plays tricks on you all the time…

Delia’s new house isn’t just a house. Long ago, it was the Piven Institute for the Care and Correction of Troubled Females—an insane asylum nicknamed “Hysteria Hall.” However, many of the inmates were not insane, just defiant and strong willed. Kind of like Delia herself.

But the house still wants to keep “troubled” girls locked away. So, in the most horrifying way, Delia gets trapped.

And that’s when she learns that the house is also haunted.

Ghost girls wander the halls in their old-fashioned nightgowns. A handsome ghost boy named Theo roams the grounds. Delia finds that all the spirits are unsettled and full of dark secrets. The house, as well, harbors shocking truths within its walls—truths that only Delia can uncover, and that may set her free.

But she’ll need to act quickly, before the house’s power overtakes everything she loves.

The moment I first heard about The Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall, I knew it was a book I HAD TO READ!  I finally had a chance to read it (did I mention I have a TBR list a mile long?!)  Anyway, Katie Alender did not disappoint with this haunting yet kind of funny book.  Me saying kind of funny could just be my twisted sense of humor creeping up.  Now, I don't mean that the book was drop dead hilarious - I just mean that it had a few funny moments throughout.

The story, in the most basic terms, is that Delia's Great-Great Aunt Cordelia, for whom Delia is named, has passed away and left her home - an old asylum - to Delia.  Delia and her family go to this house for the summer to get the home ready to sell.  But the house is haunted by the ghosts of girls who died there, and the house has a secret as well.  After dying in the house, Delia spends the rest of the novel fighting the evil, only to discover that the evil isn't where she thought it was.

Now let's get down to brass tacks:

The actual story is wonderful.  Well written and full of surprises, everything in this story really fit.  The plot worked well, and I found myself really wanting things to turn out well for Delia, her family, and the good ghosts.  There wasn't a single moment in the book when I thought "Oh that would never happen!"  It was great.

The characters were all well written and believable.  They each had their own personalities, and the author did a good job of giving us enough insight into each characters past for me to believe that they would do exactly what they were doing throughout the book. I especially loved seeing and believe Jane's transformation from bubbly little cheerleader type to sort of goth and dark girl after her sisters death.

There was an excellent feel of mystery about the house and it's grounds.  For example - you may find yourself wondering at why Delia can actually leave the house when none of the other ghosts can.  Or why time passes differently for ghosts than it does for the living - like when Delia lays down on the ground outside and suddenly 6 months have passed.  Very interesting.

This is a 5 star book all the way.  Read it - you won't be disappointed.

Dangerous Victor - Aislinn Kearns

It's time to get your reading groove on with Dangerous Victor, by author Aislinn Kearns.

This excerpt alone will want to make you get your hands on this book!

A sickly smell reached Zack; at the same time a sense of foreboding settled over him. He hadn’t noticed it at first, presuming it was from the kitchen remains. But this was something else.
He swallowed, trying not to breathe as he made his way towards the room. It had to be the bedroom—the only room yet unexplored.
“Stay here,” he growled to Radha. The rustling behind him stopped.
He tugged the sleeve of his hoodie over his hand as he reached for the knob. Careful not to leave any prints, he opened the door.
The smell assaulted him immediately, making him gag. His eyes watered, and he blinked to clear them.
“What is it?” Radha asked.
He didn’t know how to answer. Louis—at least, he assumed it was Louis—lay on the thin carpet. Dried blood, black in the wan light, pooled beneath him. Flies buzzed and writhed around him. He no longer looked human—a specialist would need to tell them how long he’d been there, but Zack’s best guess was about a week—the length of time he’d been missing.
Louis hadn’t fled to Mexico with the casino’s money. He’d bled to death on his bedroom floor.
The puzzle pieces shifted and rearranged themselves in his mind, becoming more entwined and complex, leaving gaping holes of knowledge.
“What?” Radha’s voice was thinner now, anxiety dripping from the word. She shuffled closer, and Zack wrenched the door shut. He spun, blocking her with his body, forbidding her from entering that room. She didn’t need to see her friend like that.
“I’m sorry, Radha.” He kept his arms out, stretched across the hall in case she tried to dart around him. Instead, she stared up at him as tears pooled in her eyes.
“He’s not…” she couldn’t finish.
“I’m so sorry,” Zack repeated.
The tears slipped from her eyes and slid down her cheeks. She let out a gasping sob, and Zack gathered her into his arms and half-carried her out the front door. He breathed in deep gulps of the fresh night air as he held her close.
She cried quietly against his chest, and all Zack could do is offer murmured words of comfort as he stroked her back. When was the last time he’d comforted a woman? Held her close?
Too long.
“We need to call the police,” Zack told her softly as her tears subsided.
She nodded, eyes vague. “Yes.”
“They’ll need to ask us some questions,” he warned her.
“Of course.” The nod was slower this time.
“Radha, you’ll have to tell them about the strange finances at the casino.”
At this, her eyes snapped to his. “Why? We can’t tell them.”
“I think it’s best we do,” he coaxed softly.
“But it doesn’t have anything to do with…” Her eyes widened as it dawned on her. He had to say it aloud, anyway.
“He was murdered, Radha. And there’s every chance it was to do with the casino.”

As if that wasn't enough: Check out this book cover!

And as if that wasn't enough to entice you, here's a little fun Q&A with the author:
Tell us about yourself
I’m an Aussie girl that likes action movies (with a romance!), vegan food, and dogs. I’ve travelled the world since I was ten years old, and have so far been to twenty countries. I intend to eventually visit every continent, maybe even every country.
I am an avid reader of romance novels, particularly those with beta heroes! Favourite writers include Suzanne Brockmann, Jayne Ann Krentz, and Linda Howard.
Currently I love writing romantic suspense, but have plans for books in a number of other subgenres.

What’s the Soldiering On series about?
The Soldiering On series is about a group of wounded Veterans that come together to form a security company to show the world they still have what it takes. They do jobs that use their expertise to help people in need, and fall in love along the way.
They are led by Sergeant Major Duncan Pierce (hero of the prequel novella, Soldiering On, and the Christmas novella, Christmas Tango). So far Paul (Station Alpha), Blake (Guarding Sierra), and now Zack (Dangerous Victor) have found their happy endings, with Sam (aka Angelica Samson) and a full-length Duncan book still to come.

Tell us more about your latest release, Dangerous Victor
Fun fact: The book that eventually became Dangerous Victor was the first book idea I conceived for this series.
In the book, Zack is hired by Radha Iyer, General Manager of a casino, to investigate some strange happenings with the casino’s finances. Seems like an easy enough job. Catch is, he can’t let anyone else in the casino know what he’s doing.
Before Zack can actually start his investigation, the casino’s Head of Security is found murdered, which raises the stakes to dangerous levels.
Turns out, there’s a lot more going on than Zack initially suspected, putting him and Radha in a deadly situation…

What inspired you to be a writer?
I’ve always loved writing. It’s been my passion since I was a little girl. I just loved creating worlds and characters and stories. So much more thrilling than real life!
Just for fun, if you were an animal, what would you be?
Probably a koala! I love to eat and sleep all day, plus I’m cute on the outside, but will attack if you

Echo Campaign - Taylor Brooke

 Title: Echo Campaign
Author: Taylor Brooke
Format: E-Book

Echo Campaign, by author Taylor Brooke, is the second in a series that contains its fair share of tension, drama, and yes - cliffhangers.  If you are looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is the book for you.

Brooklyn is found at the beginning of the book worried that she has been found.  The rest of the book leads us through a whirlwind of activity and kind of leaves us wondering - what the hell?!  But not in a bad way.  Fair warning - like I said, this book has a cliffhanger.  But, you won't hate it.  You will find yourself on the edge of your seat waiting for the next book to come out however.

A couple things:

*Someone is destroying the earth (and for once, it's not me!  Kidding.)
*Brooklyn finds out some pretty heavy information about her fertility towards the end of the book - but just doesn't give a damn.  But would you if you were trying to save the earth and your friends?  Probably not.

Now, folks, let me tell you - I wasn't sure what to think when I first got this book. But within a couple pages, I was hooked.  Solid character development, and lots of growth and discovery for each character occur throughout the novel.  Also, the writing is on point.  Well thought out, well structured chapters, sentences, everything.  There was plenty of tension in the book and enough Big Events to keep me reading.  And the best part was that everything that happened in the book felt like it should happen.  I didn't find myself thinking "But hey what?"

Overall, I give this book a hearty 5 stars (and go read the first book in the series as well!)

Now, peoples: Go enter the giveaway, then get reading!

Big Little Lies - Liane Moriarty

Title: Big Little Lies
Author: Liane Moriarty
Format: E-Book

Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).

Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.

New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.

Big Little Lies, Liane Moriarty's novel about abuse, schoolyard drama, friendship, and life in general is a book that follows in the petty tradition of Peyton Place.  The book takes place in a beachside town in Australia.  Jane, a new to town mother if a kindergarten students, meets Madeline on the day of her child's orientation at school.  Jane is searching for something - though you don't know what it is until later.  Celeste and Madeline sort of take Jane under their wings, even though they both harbor their own secrets or battling their own demons.  (Celeste, as we find out, is being abused.  Madeline hates her ex-husbands new wife- Barbara.)

Throughout the novel, these helicopter moms all get super involved in not only their kids lives, but the lives of the other mothers at their school.  They all spend the novel getting to know each other, snooping and gossiping about each other and the other moms, and engaging in playground antics that are not at all appropriate for grown ass women.  Then, one night at a school trivia event - held only for the adults of the school - a murder takes place, and it changes everyone's lives.

I don't want to spoil too much - because I think you need to read this book for yourselves and find out everything!  So, let's just say this:

The characters are all very well-developed and well-written.  Even the characters that you would think sort of blend together - like the Blonde Bob's - are all their own people.  The author did a remarkable job of revealing the secrets of the characters in slow fashion, letting the reader know only what was necessary in the moment.

The plot was well thought out, and even though the characters were all pretty petty, I found it believable when each event happened.  I think that these characters really came to care about each other in spite of their differences and their behaviors.

This is a book you want to get your hands on - I give it 5 stars all the way.

Mistakenly Married - Victorine E. Leiske

Title: Mistakenly Married
Author: Victorine E. Leiske
Version: E-Book

Penny’s gotten herself into another one of her crazy messes. She’s broke and about to be evicted. When her online boyfriend suggests they elope, she agrees. Why not? She loves him, even though she hasn’t met him, so she blows the last of her cash on a fun Las Vegas wedding. Except, William stands her up and the limo driver picks up the wrong guy. A smokin’ hot wrong guy. Too bad she doesn’t find out who he really is until after the wedding.

Harrison Williams needs a wife to gain access to his trust fund account. He goes to Las Vegas to meet someone, but there’s a mix up and he ends up at the Chapel-O-Love exchanging vows with Penny, a spirited girl in a cheap veil. When they realize the mistake, he convinces her to go back to Bel Air with him to prove that he’s married, and he agrees to pretend to be William so her family doesn’t have to know about her big mistake. Sounds like a good plan. What could go wrong?

Mistakenly Married is a sweet, clean romantic comedy.

Mistakenly Married, by author Victorine E. Leiske, is the perfect light hearted read.  It's easy, a little fluffy, and a book you could easily finish in a day or two.

Penny has been carrying on an online relationship with William for two years.  They've never met, and she's only seen a photo of him - though she thought he was the second man in the photo.  Then, William suggests they get married, and Penny says yes.  When William doesn't show up, Penny doesn't know what to do. Then Harrison, a rich man who is looking for a wife shows up at the wrong wedding chapel.  He was supposed to marry a friend so that he could get his trust fund.  Penny thinks he is William, they get married, and later, they find out the truth.  They decide to stay married to fool Harrison's bitchy stepmother.  What they don't count on is falling in love with each other. Over two weeks, they spend pretty much every second together, then Penny flips out at Christmas and tells her family the "truth" about their relationship.  After they separate from each other, Penny stays at her parents house for a month. Then Harrison and she both realize they are in love, and he comes hunting her down.

The book sounds crazy, I know - who marries a complete stranger without verifying who he is?!  But, it was a little cute, if fluffy.  The characters are pretty stock - the dumb blonde, the cute millionaire, the wicked evil stepmother, and the stupid brother that everyone underestimates (who turns out to be smarter and more hardworking than people realize.)  There was some tension in the book, but there could have been more.  That being said, the book was fun, and I didn't mind reading it.

The story was what I would say is middle of the road as far as the writing.  The writing wasn't great, but it held together fairly well.  Although there was some tension in the book, sometimes it felt a little forced.  I think the author sometimes threw things in just because she needed some drama (like when she made fun of Penny's clothes at a dinner party.)

I'd give the book three stars - read it if you want a light hearted read, but don't expect a War and Peace type book.
