by Tamara Grantham
(Fairy World M.D., Olive Kennedy)
Published by: Crimson Tree Publishing
Publication date: April 25th 2017
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Synopsis:
Some heroes are fated to save the world. Others are meant to destroy it…
Olive Kennedy is all about positive thinking. She’s been stuck on Earth for the past four months, waiting for the spring equinox to arrive so she can return to Fairy World — but she’s staying positive. She’s hopeful she’ll once again see her handsome Viking fiancĂ© who’s waiting for her. She’s optimistic that her mission to reclaim the sword of Dracon — a sword of King Arthur fame and the only weapon capable of killing Theht — won’t result in death and destruction. And then there’s the small matter of an asteroid that’s been ripped out of its orbit and is hurtling toward Earth…no biggie.
One last thing — she’s fated to destroy the world. To stop that prophecy from being fulfilled, she may have to sacrifice the one person she loves the most.
Good thing she’s staying positive.

Tempting the Deputy - Heidi Rice

Title: Tempting the Deputy
Author: Heidi Rice
Format: E-Arc through Netgalley

Tough, taciturn and wounded in ways that no one else knows about, Marietta rancher and part-time Deputy Sheriff Logan Tate is a man in total control of his life. Until he catches British photographer Charlotte Foster hitchhiking and ‘insists’ she gets a ride into town in his squad car…

After her run-in with Deputy Hardass, Charlie Foster is ready to ride her thumb right back out of Marietta the very next day. But that night, a trip to Grey’s Saloon fires up her imagination – and her wild side – when she overhears the town’s first responders panicking over how to come up with the money needed to repair Harry’s House in just 90 days.

Charlie has an ingenious solution to their problem, that might just require her to photograph twelve smokin’ hot guys naked. And, as luck would have it, also involves getting some much needed payback on Deputy Hardass–who isn’t too enthusiastic about participating in the calendar shoot.

But as he spends more time with Charlie, Logan can’t ignore the chemistry sizzling between them. Can a man who lives by the rules fall in love with a woman who breaks all of his?

Confession Readers: I read romance more than I let on.  Quite a bit actually.  I just don't review that romance with the same frequency as I read it.  But I am trying to be better about reviewing all the books I read, because I really do enjoy sharing what I read with you!

So, let's talk about Tempting the Deputy, by Heidi Rice.  Charlie, a professional photographer, finds herself in a small town in Montana - Marietta - where she meets Sheriff Logan Tate, whom she deems Deputy Hard-Ass.  She is taking photographs outside of town, no car, and a plan to sleep in her tent.  Then the sheriff comes along and tells her that it will be too cold for her to be outside, and she should let him bring her to town.  When she says no, she'll be fine, he doesn't listen, and to get her to town he arrests her.  That's right - he arrests her for wanting to spend the night in the woods (with a tent and other camping gear, FYI.)

Throughout the book, Charlie keeps telling herself she won't be in Marietta very long - but things keep getting in her way.  For example, she hears that the firemen of Marietta are trying to raise money, so she comes up with an idea for them to pose nude for a calendar.  They aren't all completely naked, but they're close.  This is the main reason that she sticks around longer than planned.  At first.  One thing leads to another and she and Logan have some, ahem, fun.

Anyway, I won't give away everything.  I'll jump into the likes and dislikes:

Likes:
1. Imagining those men with their clothes off...
2. Charlie was kind of funny.
3.  It was a quick read -
4. I appreciated the fact that Charlie and Logan both had hurdles and challenges to get over from their past before they could really connect, and they were both willing to share with each other (eventually.)

Dislikes:
1. The fact that Logan arrested Charlie for NO REASON.  Seriously?  And just expected her to do what he said without even thinking about it?!
2. The writing was pretty simplistic - although I should expect that from a romance novel.
3. All the men in the novel had personalities that were just too similar - there wasn't anything really distinct about them that set them apart from each other.

The story was moving enough to keep me reading, and I definitely wanted to find out how the book ended.  The characters would have been more fun to read about had they been more distinct from each other and more fleshed out.  But overall, it wasn't a terrible read.  It was a perfect rainy day book that will intrigue you enough to keep you going to the end.

Although this novel wasn't super deep, it was a good read.  I would rate it 3.5 stars - take a day and treat yourself.

Synopsis:
It’s not always about how we fall- it’s about where we end up once we land.
I remember the very first time I laid eyes on Cole Lincoln. It still feels like yesterday when he stumbled into my life with his messy brown hair and dark eyes. Even though I was only ten years old at the time, I knew right then and there that he was going to change everything.
From that point on Cole and I were always together—inseparable—and I naively believed we’d be best friends forever. But forever didn’t last nearly as long as I expected.
We grew up and grew apart, life driving the distance between us, but my love for Cole never faltered. Even long after he moved away, leaving me and our little town behind, I still carried a piece of him with me every single day. Because Cole wasn’t just my childhood best friend- the boy who knew me better than anyone else in the whole world. He was also my first love- a part of my very core.
When a tragic death brings us face to face again after six years, every single memory comes rushing to the surface. Only this is not the boy I fell in love with all those years ago. The man before me is hardened, intimidating, and so damn sexy I practically melt when those dark eyes meet mine for the first time in six years.
And like the first time he walked into my life, I know with complete certainty that everything is about to change.

Drag Teen - Jeffrey Self

 Title: Drag Teen
Author: Jeffrey Self
Format: Hardcover

A fantastic, fabulous, funny YA debut from Jeffery Self, one of the gay icons of the YouTube generation, that follows one high school student on a drag race to his future.

Debut YA author Jeffery Self takes us on a road trip with an insecure high school senior who has one goal: to be the first in his family to leave Clearwater, Florida, and go to college. The problem is, he has zero means of paying for school --
until his friends convince him to compete in a drag teen competition for a college scholarship.

JT is a gay teen living in Clearwater, FL.  He has hopes of going to college somewhere far, far away so he can get out of his small town and away from the people he hates.  One of the suggestions thrown at him by his boyfriend Seth is to join a drag teen competition in NY.  JT doesn't take the suggestion seriously, but suddenly decides to do it after being rejected for a bunch of scholarships.

So, let's talk book:

Things I liked:

Um... the cover was okay, I guess?

Things I didn't like

*The fact that JT and his boyfriend started dating when they were 13.  I mean, it just seems weird that parents would let a kid that young have a serious boyfriend or girlfriend.
*The story in general was not very well developed and was pretty predictable.  I won't give away the ending, but the events leading up to it made it very obvious what exactly was going to happen.
*There was no real character maturity or growth throughout the book.  No self-discovery or willingness to grow or anything.  It was frustrating.
*The writing was weak and sloppy, and the plot felt thrown together like the author just wanted to finish the book without putting any real thought into it.

Having read a decent amount of young adult fiction, I can say that this is a book I would never recommend even if you paid me.  You can find other books much more worth the time than this one.

 Excerpt
I believe she views herself differently because she isn’t genetically modified, but I hope she knows I don’t care about that. I’ve never met anyone like her, genetically modified or not.

Because it’s too tempting and because I’m tired of denying myself, I take her hand in mine, the warmth of it running through me.

“Listen, genetic modification is something I have. It isn’t who I am.” I turn her arm over and inspect the brown spots on her arm, the same ones that are sprinkled over her nose and along her cheeks. “Take these brown spots for example.”

She wrinkles her nose. “My freckles?”

“Yes, your freckles.” I’ve heard the term, of course, but haven’t been around many people who have them. Just one more thing I adore about Sienna—one more thing that makes her different. I rub my finger over her arm, the movie in the background creating dancing shadows. “These freckles are something you have, but they don’t define who you are.”

She tries to pull her arm away, but I won’t let her. “I hate my freckles,” she says. “They’re ugly.”

To prove a point, I lift up her arm and kiss one freckle and then another. “I like them. They’re unique. They’re beautiful.” I look at her then, and the lights from the movie turn her green eyes catlike. “Just like you.”

Excerpt
“Would you like to play a game?” He cooed to me, nipping at the tender flesh around his bite from that morning.
“W-what kind of game?”
“I call it no touching.”
“Will I be able to get my dress back on before dinner?”
“Depends on how carried away we get.”
I swallowed. “Okay. How do we play?”
He took a step back from me and started stripping. “You just stand there.”
“That doesn't seem like much of a game.”
“It will,” his voice was heavy and thick with the darkness that his devious smirk boasted as he dropped his doublet to the ground. Something ruffled my gown, and I spun around finding nothing.
The ribbon holding the lace collar on tugged itself free, and the soft froth of delicate fabric fell to the floor behind me. The sudden cool air on my neck made me shiver as the ribbons at the sleeves of my dress started to do the same.
“This really isn't much of a ga—” I turned to face him and the sight of his naked body—as always—rendered me a deaf mute.
“Trust me,” he whispered pulling the comforter and pillows from the bed.
I couldn't find my voice as both sleeves slipped off. I was only in the bodice, corset, petticoat, and skirt now. Byron was already completely nude and lounging on the blanket on the polished wooden floor. He left the cushions for me.
“How can I win?” I was eventually able to ask as he stared up at me and I felt the bodice slowly start to gape open revealing the cream-colored corset beneath.
“You don't touch yourself, or me.”
“Honestly, that sounds like everyone loses to me.” I giggled nervously.
“You'll see.”
I licked my lips as at once my skirt drifted to my feet. Something about standing before him with just his eyes on me heightened my senses. The familiar heat started building, and he hadn't laid a fingertip on me since agreeing to play the game. He was affected too, as I gazed down at his nudity I was greeted by the sight of him, seemingly growing harder and larger under my gaze.
“Remember,” he practically growled. “No touching.”

But before you enter the giveaway, here are some pretty epic reasons to add some steampunk books to your TBR list!

5 Elements of Steampunk & Why You Should Add it to Your TBR List

1. Beautiful World-Building –
Steampunk is science fiction which takes place in the past. An alternate history where inventions, gadgets, and personal conveniences do not belong, and yet, are there. Often these inventions are powered by steam, hydraulics, clockwork, gyroscopic action, or pretty much anything but gasoline. The author has to create a beautiful Victorian setting where mechanical items exist that shouldn’t in Victorian history.

2. Strong Female Characters –
It was in the Victorian era that feminism grew by leaps and bounds and the suffrage movement gained major traction. Because of the strong influences of women in the time period in which steampunk has its roots, they tend to take centerstage in the interpretation of this genre. Who doesn’t like a woman who steals the show or takes charge?

3. Action and Adventure –
What would inventive fiction be without an inventive plotline? In Steampunk you will find a bit of drama, a bit of fantasy, a tad of mystery, but generally, you’ll find adventure that expands the horizons of your imagination… often viewed from an airship or mechanical animal.

4. Fun Fashion and Costumes –
Not many genres can boast an entire theme of Cosplay. People love to dress in steampunk fashions for Comic Cons, book conventions, Halloween, and parties. Even the high fashion world has runway shows dedicated to this style of dressing. Go to Etsy and search “steampunk” you’ll find all sorts of fun things to wear while you read.

5. It’s More Familiar Than You Think –
The gifs in this post are all from movies or shows you may have watched: Wild Wild West with Will Smith, Stardust with Claire Danes, the animated film, Howl’s Moving Castle, and episodes of Dr. Who. If you’ve loved any of these shows, you’ve already gotten a taste of Steampunk. Don’t pass up the chance to read a book or watch a movie just because of the clever combination of past and present themes. Give it a try and you may find yourself a new fan of the genre!
