Drag Teen - Jeffrey Self

 Title: Drag Teen
Author: Jeffrey Self
Format: Hardcover

A fantastic, fabulous, funny YA debut from Jeffery Self, one of the gay icons of the YouTube generation, that follows one high school student on a drag race to his future.

Debut YA author Jeffery Self takes us on a road trip with an insecure high school senior who has one goal: to be the first in his family to leave Clearwater, Florida, and go to college. The problem is, he has zero means of paying for school --
until his friends convince him to compete in a drag teen competition for a college scholarship.

JT is a gay teen living in Clearwater, FL.  He has hopes of going to college somewhere far, far away so he can get out of his small town and away from the people he hates.  One of the suggestions thrown at him by his boyfriend Seth is to join a drag teen competition in NY.  JT doesn't take the suggestion seriously, but suddenly decides to do it after being rejected for a bunch of scholarships.

So, let's talk book:

Things I liked:

Um... the cover was okay, I guess?

Things I didn't like

*The fact that JT and his boyfriend started dating when they were 13.  I mean, it just seems weird that parents would let a kid that young have a serious boyfriend or girlfriend.
*The story in general was not very well developed and was pretty predictable.  I won't give away the ending, but the events leading up to it made it very obvious what exactly was going to happen.
*There was no real character maturity or growth throughout the book.  No self-discovery or willingness to grow or anything.  It was frustrating.
*The writing was weak and sloppy, and the plot felt thrown together like the author just wanted to finish the book without putting any real thought into it.

Having read a decent amount of young adult fiction, I can say that this is a book I would never recommend even if you paid me.  You can find other books much more worth the time than this one.

I believe she views herself differently because she isn’t genetically modified, but I hope she knows I don’t care about that. I’ve never met anyone like her, genetically modified or not.

Because it’s too tempting and because I’m tired of denying myself, I take her hand in mine, the warmth of it running through me.

“Listen, genetic modification is something I have. It isn’t who I am.” I turn her arm over and inspect the brown spots on her arm, the same ones that are sprinkled over her nose and along her cheeks. “Take these brown spots for example.”

She wrinkles her nose. “My freckles?”

“Yes, your freckles.” I’ve heard the term, of course, but haven’t been around many people who have them. Just one more thing I adore about Sienna—one more thing that makes her different. I rub my finger over her arm, the movie in the background creating dancing shadows. “These freckles are something you have, but they don’t define who you are.”

She tries to pull her arm away, but I won’t let her. “I hate my freckles,” she says. “They’re ugly.”

To prove a point, I lift up her arm and kiss one freckle and then another. “I like them. They’re unique. They’re beautiful.” I look at her then, and the lights from the movie turn her green eyes catlike. “Just like you.”

“Would you like to play a game?” He cooed to me, nipping at the tender flesh around his bite from that morning.
“W-what kind of game?”
“I call it no touching.”
“Will I be able to get my dress back on before dinner?”
“Depends on how carried away we get.”
I swallowed. “Okay. How do we play?”
He took a step back from me and started stripping. “You just stand there.”
“That doesn't seem like much of a game.”
“It will,” his voice was heavy and thick with the darkness that his devious smirk boasted as he dropped his doublet to the ground. Something ruffled my gown, and I spun around finding nothing.
The ribbon holding the lace collar on tugged itself free, and the soft froth of delicate fabric fell to the floor behind me. The sudden cool air on my neck made me shiver as the ribbons at the sleeves of my dress started to do the same.
“This really isn't much of a ga—” I turned to face him and the sight of his naked body—as always—rendered me a deaf mute.
“Trust me,” he whispered pulling the comforter and pillows from the bed.
I couldn't find my voice as both sleeves slipped off. I was only in the bodice, corset, petticoat, and skirt now. Byron was already completely nude and lounging on the blanket on the polished wooden floor. He left the cushions for me.
“How can I win?” I was eventually able to ask as he stared up at me and I felt the bodice slowly start to gape open revealing the cream-colored corset beneath.
“You don't touch yourself, or me.”
“Honestly, that sounds like everyone loses to me.” I giggled nervously.
“You'll see.”
I licked my lips as at once my skirt drifted to my feet. Something about standing before him with just his eyes on me heightened my senses. The familiar heat started building, and he hadn't laid a fingertip on me since agreeing to play the game. He was affected too, as I gazed down at his nudity I was greeted by the sight of him, seemingly growing harder and larger under my gaze.
“Remember,” he practically growled. “No touching.”

April Book Affair

Hey lovely readers - It's a little time for the Xpresso Book Tours April Book Affair!  You have the chance to not only win a $100 gift card (check out the bottom of this post!) but you can go to this link to check out 46 free books!

But before you enter the giveaway, here are some pretty epic reasons to add some steampunk books to your TBR list!

5 Elements of Steampunk & Why You Should Add it to Your TBR List

1. Beautiful World-Building –
Steampunk is science fiction which takes place in the past. An alternate history where inventions, gadgets, and personal conveniences do not belong, and yet, are there. Often these inventions are powered by steam, hydraulics, clockwork, gyroscopic action, or pretty much anything but gasoline. The author has to create a beautiful Victorian setting where mechanical items exist that shouldn’t in Victorian history.

2. Strong Female Characters –
It was in the Victorian era that feminism grew by leaps and bounds and the suffrage movement gained major traction. Because of the strong influences of women in the time period in which steampunk has its roots, they tend to take centerstage in the interpretation of this genre. Who doesn’t like a woman who steals the show or takes charge?

3. Action and Adventure –
What would inventive fiction be without an inventive plotline? In Steampunk you will find a bit of drama, a bit of fantasy, a tad of mystery, but generally, you’ll find adventure that expands the horizons of your imagination… often viewed from an airship or mechanical animal.

4. Fun Fashion and Costumes –
Not many genres can boast an entire theme of Cosplay. People love to dress in steampunk fashions for Comic Cons, book conventions, Halloween, and parties. Even the high fashion world has runway shows dedicated to this style of dressing. Go to Etsy and search “steampunk” you’ll find all sorts of fun things to wear while you read.

5. It’s More Familiar Than You Think –
The gifs in this post are all from movies or shows you may have watched: Wild Wild West with Will Smith, Stardust with Claire Danes, the animated film, Howl’s Moving Castle, and episodes of Dr. Who. If you’ve loved any of these shows, you’ve already gotten a taste of Steampunk. Don’t pass up the chance to read a book or watch a movie just because of the clever combination of past and present themes. Give it a try and you may find yourself a new fan of the genre!

The drive back to the station was quiet. I was inside my own head the whole time, and Twitch seemed inclined to let me. It was an uncomfortable silence for the most part. I noticed him look over at me curiously a few times, and I knew he was wondering what my deal was.
When we got to the precinct I jumped out quickly and headed for the door.
“Hey! What's the matter, Trix?” he yelled out the window.
“Nothing, I am perfectly fine.” I looked over my shoulder and saw him raise a skeptical eyebrow.
“Whatever you say, Tasha,” he said a little angrily and peeled out of the parking lot.
I was a little dumbfounded. Why is he angry? I wondered as I walked into the office and headed for Keller’s office.
“What’d you find?” he asked without looking up.
“We know where Brendan is, and I need to get in touch with Cedar Hills Sheriff’s department and ask permission to go in and get him.”
That got him to look up, and what I saw didn’t surprise me. The blood had drained from his face.
“Holy shit, kid. Are you serious?”
I looked down and ran my hand through my scalp. “Yeah, the one place in the world I never wanted to go back to is the one place this douche decided to hide.” I sighed.
He got up and walked around his desk to stand face to face with me, his compassion was surprising. My boss is usually not one to express any emotion other than frustration. “Look at me Tasha,” he said. “Everyone has to face their demons sometime.”
“I won't be there long enough to do that. I'm just going in, getting him, and getting the hell out of dodge,” I replied with determination.
“Whatever you say kid. I'll start the paperwork. Why don't you go and call the assholes up in Cedar Hill and let them know you're coming up to get a suspect,” he said.
I walked to my desk like I was walking to the guillotine. Cedar Hill was a small town outside of Portland, and I knew just about every sheriff’s deputy by name. Well, I did ten years ago anyway. I picked up the phone and dialed the number I still knew by heart. It was answered on the third ring.
“Deputy Cagle, how can I help you,” the voice said on the other end of the line.
“Hi there, Deputy, I'm detective Natasha Price with LAPD. I need to speak with Sheriff Townsend,” I replied hoping beyond hope that he wouldn't put two and two together.
“Tasha? Is that you?” Tommy asked.
“Hey Tommy, can I speak to the sheriff please?” I asked.
“How have you been? It's been years!” he bellowed loudly enough that I’m sure everyone in the department heard him.
“I'm good, Tommy, can I speak to Sheriff Townsend, please?” I asked, exasperated.
“Sheriff Townsend died three years ago. Dave McCallister is Sheriff now.”
“Davie is Sheriff?” I was horrified.
“Yup! You wanna talk to him?”
“Yeah,” I sighed, trying hard to keep from groaning.
“Good talking to you Tasha. Just give me a sec and I will put you through,” he said and then he was gone.
The low rumbling growl of my high school sweetheart came over the phone a minute later. I was so not happy to be talking to that dick again, but I didn't have much choice.
“Tish-Tosh,” he said into the phone. “What the hell do you want?”
“So nice to talk to you too, Davie,” I replied deadpan.
“I don't have time for games Tasha. I'm a busy man runnin’ the county. But, what can I do for you?” he purred over the line.
There was a time when I would have thought that was sexy. I would have prayed for him to talk to me like that. Now, I just wanted him to shut up so I could get this investigation over with.
“I need permission to come into you're jurisdiction and apprehend a kidnapper who is in your area,” I rushed my reply.
“Wow!” that smug voice replies. “Never thought I would see the day that Tasha Price asked permission to do anything.”
“Davie, I don't want to argue with you. I just want to know if I can come to town arrest my kidnapper and then go home.” I was not about to let this jerk get to me.
“Okay, okay, yes you can come home,” he said in his low timber and I wanted to gag.
“That's not my home, not anymore.” I said before hanging up on him.
I did get some satisfaction in that, but not much. The dread that had pooled in my belly, since I found out where Brendan was, had grown exponentially after finding out that Davie was the new Sheriff. I had hoped I could get through the job without taking a trip down memory lane, but it looked like that was not in the cards for me.
I was banging my head on my desk repeatedly when Twitch walked up. He grabbed me by my long ponytail and tilted my head all the way back so I had to look up at him.
“What the hell are you doin’, Trix?” He seemed as if he still hadn’t cooled off all the way.
“What does it look like I'm doing? I'm trying to figure out how my great life turned to into such complete and utter shit over the last month! What are you doing?” I sneered at him.
“Whoa! Retract the claws. I was just trying to figure out why on earth you would want to mess up that pretty face of yours,” he winked.
“It's my hometown,” I blurted before I could stop myself. He looked me over for what seemed like a few minutes.
“Aww, I think I see.”
“No, I really don't think you do. I just found out that the sheriff up there also just happens to be my old high school boyfriend.” I commenced with the head banging.
“Stop, Tash, don't make me tie your hair in a knot around the chair to make sure you can't do that anymore.”
I looked at him, stunned. Did he really just threaten to tie my hair around a chair? I had no doubt that the big dumb alpha male would do it too. He nodded as if he heard my thoughts.
“Now, it’s going to be fine. What can Dudley Doright do? He gave you permission to be in his town to get Brendan, right?”
I nodded and took a cleansing breath. He was right; there really wasn't anything that Davie could do to me. It was an uncomfortable situation, but I was eventually going to have to face it.
I would never tell Twitch he was right though because his head was big enough as it was. If I complimented him he may not be able to fit through the door.
Feeling Twitch’s hand in my hair, I tried to look up when I felt his warm breath by my ear. “It's obvious to me that you haven't been back in a while, so you're most likely running from something. If you want to tell me, I’d never judge you.”
“Nope, not running from anything.” There was no way I could confide in him. My past was staying where it was, and even though in my heart—the betrayer—I knew I could trust him, I didn’t want to go there. Not now. Not ever.
“Right,” he drawled. “Well then let's get this thing going. We have tickets for the five am flight out of LAX. I will see you at check-in at four,” he said briskly and then he walked away.
I started banging my head on the desk again, wondering when and why my life got so screwed up.

The Accident Season - Moira Fowley-Doyle

Title: The Accident Season
Author: Moira Fowley-Doyle
Format: Paperback

It's the accident season, the same time every year. Bones break, skin tears, bruises bloom.

The accident season has been part of seventeen-year-old Cara's life for as long as she can remember. Towards the end of October, foreshadowed by the deaths of many relatives before them, Cara's family becomes inexplicably accident-prone. They banish knives to locked drawers, cover sharp table edges with padding, switch off electrical items - but injuries follow wherever they go, and the accident season becomes an ever-growing obsession and fear.

But why are they so cursed? And how can they break free?

The Accident Season, by Moira Fowley-Doyle, is a book of magical realism.  The writing is a little... interesting, but it fits with the mystery of the book.  You will find odd characters (Bea), weird situations (Elsie showing up in all. those. pictures), and some forbidden romance (Cara is in love with her now ex-stepbrother, which I think is just coo-coo, but the rest of the book was great.)

Cara and her family - mother, Sister Alice and Stepbrother Sam - have been subjected to the accident season every year for as long as Alice and Cara have been alive.  Every October, for the entire month, stuff just happens to them: broken bones, bruises, and, during one especially bad year, death.

To say this book is odd is an understatement.  But I LOVE that it's odd.  I love that Bea sits in class and looks at tarot cards, and that Cara and Bea are throwing a party called the Black Cat and Whisky Moon Masquerade, and that the party is going to take place at an old abandoned house (that, oddly enough, was listed as Elsie's address in her school file.)

There is a lot of sort of dark mysterious stuff that floats throughout this novel, including:

*The fact that NONE of the teachers remember Elsie.  Not a damn one of them.
*The secrets booth.
*That Cara and Alice both think Elsie was in the others year at school.
*That Sam's dad just took off and left Sam with Alice, Cara, and their mother.

This is a book I wanted to never end, because it dug me in, and made me want to be in this story (without the random accidents.  I just wanted to live where they live.)

The author does a good job with character development and story development throughout the novel.  It only takes place over the course of about 10 days, but the book didn't have any "Oh that could never happen" moments, and each character stuck to who they were throughout the book.  Because the novel took place during such a short time span, the characters didn't really have time to change really (because how much emotional growth can one do over a period of a week and a half?!) but that was okay.

If you're a fan of magic, or magical realism, this is a book you'll want to get your hands on.

That’s challenge enough, but on the eve of battle, Elea realizes that her true enemies may be far more powerful than even Viktor: The deities Oni and Yuri could be out to destroy her as well. With major battles brewing on two fronts, Elea’s not sure that she’ll win, but with true love to inspire her, she’s certainly ready to fight.

Immortal Fire - Annette Marie

Book & Author Details:

Immortal Fire
by Annette Marie
(Red Winter Trilogy #3)
Publication date: April 11th 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult

Once, Emi believed the heavenly gods were righteous and wise, while the earthly yokai spirits were bloodthirsty and evil. But with a traitorous deity poised to destroy her world, and the yokai standing as humanity’s only defense, the lies of her upbringing have toppled to reveal a far more terrifying reality.

Despite the looming threat, Emi can’t escape her greatest distraction: Shiro, the fox yokai who has so deftly claimed her heart for his own. Soon—too soon—she will have to break the curse that binds his magic and memories. And once the ancient power inside him awakens, the yokai she loves will be changed forever.
As the earthly gods gather to wage war against the heavens, Emi and Shiro must gamble everything to turn the tide against their immortal, all-powerful foes. Together, they will find a way to save her world—even if it means losing each other.

Annette Marie is the author of the Amazon best-selling Steel & Stone series, which includes Goodreads Choice Award nominee Yield the Night, and fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast- paced urban fantasy and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it's not quite that bad) with her comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

Annette Marie’s Top 5 Dragons

1. Smaug from The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien, because of course he’s in my top five. He’s the ultimate dragon personality.

“My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail is a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!”

2. Temeraire from His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik. Temeraire just isn’t quite what you’d expect—intelligent, elegant, and surprisingly polite. I’m pretty sure everyone who’s read the book immediately adored him.

The dragonet puzzled at the question for several moments, and finally said, with a dissatisfied air, “I do not have a name.”
Laurence asked, formally, “May I give you one?”
It–or rather he, for the voice was definitely masculine–looked him over again, paused to scratch at an apparently flawless spot on his back, then said with unconvincing indifference, “If you please.”

3. Mushu from Disney’s Mulan. This one needs no explanation, right?

Mulan: My ancestors sent a little lizard to help me?
Mushu: Hey! Dragon. DRA-GON, not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing.

4. Janx from The Negotiator Trilogy by CE Murphy. A dragon in human form, he’s my favorite character from the series. I wanted him to be in every chapter.

Margrit saw him move, quick long strides that somehow suggested a larger creature transferring its attention from one spot to another. His approach was consummate grace, fire flowing across an open space like a living thing. Then he was beside her, making the air crackle with dry heat.
Eyes half-lidded like a snake’s, he stepped back with a smile that revealed curving eyeteeth and offered her a hand. “Dance with me, Margrit Knight.”

5. Zwi from the Steel & Stone Series by yours truly. How could I resist including one of my own dragons? Zwi is absolutely Adorable, with a capital A. Plus she’s clever, brave, and always ready for trouble.

Piper drew herself up and glared instead. “Your dragonet snuck into my room and stole something from me.”
Ash glanced at the creature on his shoulder. It tilted its head and somehow managed to project total innocence.
“Zwi, were you stealing again?” he murmured.
The dragonet trilled, its head weaving from side to side as it squirmed in a distinctly guilty way.

Annette Marie’s Top 5 Scariest Monsters in the Red Winter Trilogy

5. Kappa – These water imps are best known for drowning people. They live in the water and if you get too close, they’ll drag you under, drown you, and eat you.

4. Oni – Seven-foot-tall ogres with reddish skin, black manes, and tusks. They live in forests, travel in packs, and if they catch you—yep, they’ll eat you.

3. Yamachichi – Though the heroine Emi only briefly encounters this foe, it’s not to be underestimated. It might look like a furry dwarf, but it can steal the breath from your lungs with a single touch.

2. Kanashibari – To take the creepy level up a few notches, these ghostly specters are demons born from the souls of deceased children. They like to trap people in nightmares—or their worst memories.

1. Tsuchigumo – Giant. Spiders. Need I say more? One bite from these icky, nasty, horrible arachnids will put their victim into a coma so the spiders can slowly feed off their life force. Uuuuugh.

Annette Marie’s 5 Most Recent Fantasy Reads

Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas – If you aren’t reading this series, you should be! An assassin-turned-queen, princes, fae, magic, action, intrigue. I literally can’t put these books down, which is a problem considering how huge they are.

A Thousand Nights by EK Johnston – A lyrical tale set in a fantastical desert landscape. The first line is what captured me, and I had no choice but to read it: Lo-Melkhiin killed three hundred girls before he came to her village looking for a wife.

Trickery by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington – I loved this book. One “dweller” girl and five god-to-be brothers with different talents—trickery, persuasion, pain, seduction, and strength. Hot, hilarious, and entertaining to the last page.

Vampire Girl by Karpov Kinrade – A version of hell that’s completely different from what you’d expect, with seven wildly different princes—the “seven sins”—and one poor girl who has to choose which of them she’ll have to marry.

Stolen Magic by Marina Finlayson – In this world, shifters and shapers coexist unharmoniously, with Lexi caught in the middle with her one-of-a-kind ability to control animals and a bad habit of stealing things she shouldn’t.
