Reality Check - Peter Abrahams

Title: Reality Check
Author: Peter Abrahams
Format: Audiobook

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
QB of the varsity football team. Passing grades in all his classes. Dating the hottest--and smartest--girl at school. Summer job paying more than minimum wage. Things in Cody's world seem to be going pretty well. Until, that is, his girlfriend, Clea, is sent off to boarding school across the country, and a torn ACL ends his high school football career. But bad things come in threes--or in Cody's case, sixes and twelves--and the worst is yet to come. While limping through town one day, Cody sees a newspaper heading: "Local Girl Missing." Clea, now his ex, has disappeared from her boarding school in Vermont, and the only clue is a letter she sent to Cody the morning of her disappearance. With that as his guide, Cody sets out to find out what happened. Once in Vermont, he unearths the town's secrets--and finds out that football isn't the only thing he's good at.
Reality Check is another edge-of-your-seat suspense novel by the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-nominated author of Down the Rabbit Hole.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hard times hit Cody when he tears his ACL and has to sit out the rest of the year on the football team.  On top of that, his girlfriend (or now ex-girlfriend) has been sent to a boarding school in Vermont.  When she goes missing, Cody drops everything and drives across the country to help find her.  He does some crazy things during this time, including:

*Drive across the country as a MINOR to search for his ex-girlfriend (while leaving only a note for his dad)
*Takes a job at the boarding school that Clea attends, working in the horse stables.
*Goes out to the bar and visits with Big Len, who gets him drunk (even though I am sure Len knows that Cody is in high school.  I think Len just wants Cody to start gambling.

The Characters:
*Cody - was not very deep considering he was the main character.
*Clea - had more depth and emotion and change than Cody, and most of the novel was just people talking about her instead of her actually being present in the novel.
*The Minor Characters - I'm not even going to mention them all by name, because I just didn't care about them.  They all felt too similar and boring.

The Story Itself:
The story was supposed to be a mystery.  Supposed to be being the important phrase.  There wasn't much mystery to the novel.  It was easy to figure out what happened to Clea, and why she disappeared.  Also, the ending, when Cody was helping Clea escape from the basement was rushed - one page they were running out of the house from Big Len and a police office, and like 5 pages later they were on an airplane home.  There was not nearly enough tension in this book to make me really invested in it.  I just didn't care.

I would rate this book 2 stars, only because I know all the hard work it actually takes to write a book - but I wouldn't recommend it to others.

It's Complicated - Julia Kent

Title: It's Complicated
Author: Julia Kent
Format: E-Book

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hot make-out session? Check. With the dreamy obstetrician? Check. While her best friend is in labor? Um...
It's Complicated.
Josie Mendham never meant to have her own (radically different) set of gasps and moans a few doors down from where her best friend, Laura, was giving birth. And stealing away with the obstetrician who was consulting on Laura's case certainly wasn't part of any birth plan.
When Dr. Alex Derjian watched the foursome enter the labor ward he did a doubletake: two dads? That defied biology as he knew it. Even more intriguing was the woman with the birthing mother and the fathers: Josie, the nurse he'd been watching from afar for months. One elevator kiss led to an on-call room soiree and soon he was breaking every romantic rule in his playbook.
Finding his way into her pants wouldn't be hard.
But into her heart? That would be a challenge.
It's Complicated is the much-awaited novel that combines the stories of Laura, Mike, Dylan, Josie, and Madge from the Her Two Billionaires series with Darla, Trevor and Joe from the USA Today Bestseller Random Acts of Crazy, with Alex and Josie at the center of it all.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Josie is guarded about love - in fact, she just doesn't do it.  She has sexual partners, not boyfriends.  Then she meets Alex, a doctor who works at the hospital where her friend Laura has her baby.  They meet (officially, as they've seen each other around through their jobs - she's a nurse) and they have this attraction to each other.  Anyway, I won't give a ton away, because I want you to be surprised.  Long story short: they meet, they like each other, they have sex, they have fights, then they realize they can't be without each other.

So: The Characters:

The characters are all okay.  I didn't really feel like there was a ton of depth to the characters.  They were each individual from each other for the most part, but not distinct enough for me to really be able to see any difference in them.

The Story:

Well, okay, so the story starts out weird.  Laura is in labor, and doesn't want to admit it.  And she's in a three way relationship with two men - they were with a woman who died, then they met Laura.... And now they are having a baby together.  Anyway, the story was a pretty typical romance - with the typical guy meets girl, and they have the usual back and forth "I love him, now we're fighting, now I love him again" stuff that's in every single romance book.

The story was.... unique in the sense that this is the first book I've ever read that had a three person relationship in it.  I think it's important to have relationships that are.... I don't want to say different, but that are not what people expect.  Most people have this idea that a relationship should be two white people (and always a man and woman), and that's not the way the world works.  There are same sex relationships, and people of color relationships, and open relationships, and on and on.  We need more books that show that every relationship is normal and valid (unless it's abusive, of course, but that's a whole other diatribe.)

Overall, I wasn't terribly invested in the story, because I didn't feel like it was terribly deep or fulfilling, but that's just me.

Things I actually Did Like About this Book:
*The openness of Laura and her boyfriends having a three way relationship.
*That Alex takes his grandpa to the doctor a lot for his Alzheimer's study and trials.
*That Alex's mom had a kid when she was so young, but didn't let that stop her from getting what she wanted and becoming a psychologist.

I think overall I would give this book 2.5 stars.  It's not one I would solidly recommend, but I didn't totally hate it.

Jessie Donovan wrote her first story at age five, and after discovering the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey in junior high, realized that people actually wanted to read stories like those floating around inside her head. From there on out, she was determined to tap into her over-active imagination and write a book someday.

After living abroad for five years and earning degrees in Japanese, Anthropology, and Secondary Education, she buckled down and finally wrote her first full-length book. While that story will never see the light of day, it laid the world-building groundwork of what would become her debut paranormal romance, Blaze of Secrets. May Genre Crave

Excerpt of BETWEEN BREATHS by Alexa Padgett

HAYDEN

I stared into those beautiful blue eyes. The tightness eased. Breathing wasn’t a chore. “I’m not saying tomorrow will be better.”
Her lips flipped up in a sardonic smile. “It’s possible tomorrow will be worse. This is hospice after all.”
“I’m expecting worse.” I tilted my head back and groaned. “I don’t want my mum’s death to drag out. Too many people are counting on me.”
“You’ll do the best you can.”
“Doesn’t feel good enough.”
“Welcome to the club. Speaking of, my sister doesn’t believe I met you, Mr. World Famous Rock Star.”
I raised my eyebrow. I cradled her shoulders. I liked holding Briar. Wasn’t a briar some kind of rose? Sweet but with enough defenses to bloom. I liked that—she’d fight for her chances.
“We’ll have to take a selfie. For digital proof.”
“Thought you didn’t like digital proof and journos, as you call them.”
“Reckon I don’t. But . . . I’m making an exception.”
Her lips curved up and her eyes sparkled. The weight from my chest eased a little and I could draw a full breath. “I’d like that. Ready to go?”
“Photo first.”
I grabbed her phone and positioned us together before snapping a few photos. “For posterity or whatever.”
She smiled again and the world shone brighter. I didn’t want to turn around and look at the building again.
“I know just the place to go.”
She snagged my hand, her cool fingers sliding between mine, our palms fusing softly. Something in me clicked, like I’d just latched into a safety belt. I followed behind her as she pulled me toward her car again. After she unlocked it, I opened her door and waited for her to slide in. Instead, she stepped in closer, her body heat mingling with mine.
“I’ve done a lot of soul-searching these past few months, Hayden. But today, with Ken’s comments, my purpose became clear.” She closed her eyes, reliving something. “I’m tired of closing off, pushing people away,” she whispered. “It’s all I’ve done for years.” She opened her eyes, filled with the fire of new determination. “So I mean it when I say I’ll be here with you. Through this. As your friend.”
I ran my knuckle down her cheek, marveling at the smooth, firm texture of her skin. “I don’t know how I got so lucky in the friend department, but I’m chuffed you’re here. And such a gorgeous lady at that.”
She rolled her eyes, and I winked. Walking around the car, I curled my fingers tight to hold in the fading heat from her skin. I glanced up at the building. Whatever my mum needed to tell me, I needed to hear. I could process her reasons and come to terms with her years of rejection later, but for now, she wanted me to know her side of the story. And I’d listen.
As I eased into the car, Briar’s floral scent wrapped around me, cradling me almost as well as her arms had just moments before.

HUMANIZING CHARACTERS by Olivia Wildenstein (author of GHOSTBOY, CHAMELEON, & THE DUKE OF GRAFFITI)

http://oliviawildenstein.com/2014/09/23/humanizing-characters/
Reading is an adventure, but it’s also sensorial experience. A reader wants to feel something, be it hate, love, despair, hope, or heartache, and what creates these feelings is his or her involvement with the characters.
As a writer, you must create 3Dimensional characters on 2Dimensional surfaces. It seems easy enough: give your character long black hair, a straight nose, an hourglass body, and large black eyes, and you have yourself a protagonist that the reader can visualize. But it’s not enough to create a bond.
Think of the number of people you cross paths with in the street everyday. Think of how many stay with you. Can you recollect one person you saw this morning? Probably not. But if you do, this means the person had something different, something that captured your attention. Did they wear a strange perfume? Were their voices particularly shrill? Was their hair ridiculously teased or slick with gel?
For your readers to know your characters, you must first mold them into someone you can see, touch, smell, feel; someone you come to know inside out; someone you will become as intimate with as a real-life partner.
Begin with the basics.
– age: 17
– gender: female
– origins: South American

Add an image. Browse Google Images with the above key words. Once you’ve found a match, copy that picture into a word file.
Make a list of attributes belonging to this character. Let your imagination run wild.
– height: petite
– scent: smells like roses and Earl Grey
– appearance: wears Goth makeup and has piercings
– favorite clothes: Doc Martens boots and plaid skirts
– favorite activity: reads nineteenth-century literary fiction
– roots: Mom was a Columbian beauty queen – Dad is complete opposite: pale, blond, blue-eyed
– history: lost her mother as a child
– how does she get around: her father’s Volvo Woodie
– voice: deep and raspy, like a bumblebee
– tone: dry, sarcastic
– home: one story house on Maplewood Drive in Greenwich, CT

Meet Corazon Matthews, known to all as Cora, the aloof Goth girl who avoids her peers and is angry at life. She is one of the main three characters in my newest YA novel titled, Ghost Boy, Chameleon, and the Duke of Graffiti.
Go ahead and craft your character chart. Not only will it allow you to be creative, but it will make you consistent, two tools that will turn your fictional protagonists into unforgettable human beings.

City of Miracles - Robert Jackson Bennett

Title: City of Miracles
Author: Robert Jackson Bennett
Format: Paperback

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Revenge. It's something Sigrud je Harkvaldsson is very, very good at. Maybe the only thing.
So when he learns that his oldest friend and ally, former Prime Minister Shara Komayd, has been assassinated, he knows exactly what to do and that no mortal force can stop him from meting out the suffering Shara's killers deserve.
Yet as Sigrud pursues his quarry with his customary terrifying efficiency, he begins to fear that this battle is an unwinnable one. Because discovering the truth behind Shara's death will require him to take up arms in a secret, decades-long war, face down an angry young god, and unravel the last mysteries of Bulikov, the city of miracles itself. And perhaps most daunting of all finally face the truth about his own cursed existence.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When Shara Komayd is assassinated, her friend Sigrud vows to get revenge on the person who killed her.  Sigrud doesn't realize everything that has happened since before he went into seclusion.  Throughout the course of the novel, he gets a chance to meet/reunite many people, including Khadse, Taty, Ivanya, and more.

This novel is not at first what it appears to be.  What I mean by that is the miracles are rather trippy, and make things mysterious throughout the novel.  For example, when Sigrud tries to shoot Khadse, and the bullet just stops and floats in the air next to Khadse - it's because Khadse's jacket is a miracle.  The miracles like that happen throughout the book - which is part of the magic.

The only thing that threw me about this book is that it is the first one in the series that I have read, so I was unfamiliar with the world that Bennett has created in his previous novels, City of Stairs and City of Blades.

I fell in love with the writing, and the world in this book.  The characters are all very well-developed, and they show a lot of growth and development throughout the story.  I found myself rooting for Sigrud, and later for Taty as well.  They were just wonderful characters that I couldn't help but like.  (Although, there was a small part of me that kind of liked Khadse as well, if only for the bad guy aspect.)

I appreciated that the author touched on how Sigrud was treated differently as well because he's a Dreyling.  The tensions that Sigrud felt because of that were very real.

The whole novel was well developed.  Bennett did a great job with his world building throughout the novel, and the events tied together well.

This is a novel worth reading - I rate it 5 stars.  Pick it up now - you won't be disappointed.

I write to make you feel, think, and burn with the thrill that can only come from getting lost in the pages. I love to write unforgettable characters who wrestle with life's largest problems.
